The Jasol story
From its humble beginnings in 1934, Jasol has evolved into a significant player in the cleaning and hygiene chemical market in Australasia and Asia. With its strong focus on growth and development Jasol has a strong and successful future ahead.
In the beginning…
Jasol Australia was established in 1934 when an enterprising chemist, Mr Charles Johnson, approached Mr Edwards (a prominent Adelaide businessman) with a formulation that enabled oil to be mixed with water. Together they formed a chemical company that we now know as Jasol. Mr. Johnson originally wanted to call the proposed company Johnson’s Antiseptic Soluble Oils Ltd but was content with the abbreviation JASOL.
Jasol was incorporated as a private company on the 13th of August 1934. The manufacture of their first product “Jasol B” took place at the home of Mr Johnson in California St, Adelaide, South Australia.
Distribution of the product was by Mr Johnson’s pushbike. After manufacturing a batch of Jasol B, Mr Johnson would fill a box he had attached to his pushbike and call on wholesalers taking orders. His first customers included companies such as Fauldings and Bickfords.
A household name begins to expand through Australia
In 1936 manufacturing was moved to new premises in Flinders Street Adelaide. New products added to the range included Pine Oda (Diluted Jasol B), Johnson’s Catarrh Balm (a Vicks style product), Holdfast Sticking Cement (dentures), and the flagship product of the company C & C Cleaner. C & C Cleaner stood for “caretakers and cleaners”. This product quickly established Jasol as a household name in South Australia (SA). Consumers still associate Jasol as the “red cleaner” on the supermarket shelf, which is known as Regular Cleaner.
In 1942 the need for a larger manufacturing facility resulted in Jasol moving to 33 Pirie Street Adelaide. During this period an innovative marketing campaign was conducted with a person employed to ride around Adelaide in a Jasol uniform looking for houses with telephone lines. He would then offer to clean housewives’ telephones with Jasol B.
In 1960 Jasol had once again outgrown their manufacturing facilities and moved to Willcox Avenue Prospect. At this time, Jasol was the most active manufacturer of chemicals in South Australia. During this time an aerosol plant was installed.
In 1971 Jasol was sold to Fauldings.
In 1984 GWF acquired a small Western Australia (WA) based chemical business called Entex Chemicals.
In 1986 GWF acquired Jasol Chemical products from Fauldings. As Jasol was was already firmly established after a long period in SA it was decided to utilise the Jasol name in both WA and SA. Manufacturing facilities in SA were transferred to WA in 1991.
In 1995 Jasol acquired the Big H Chemical Company in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.
In 1996 Jasol acquired Lustral Chemicals (incorporating the Lustral, Redic, Diamond K, Hunters Industrials and Spartan Chemical ranges) in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. The company then became known as Jasol Australia. In 2000 Jasol Australia acquired Titan Products in Tamworth Country NSW to compliment existing distribution into the Country areas.
In 2002 Jasol Australia purchased the business of EST which specialises in Cleaning.In.Place cleaning chemicals for the dairy industry.
Jasol enters the New Zealand and Asia markets
In 2003 Jasol expanded operations into New Zealand with the acquisition of Wilson’s chemical. In 2005 Andrew Ltd (a leading cleaning and industrial chemical manufacturer) was acquired.
In 2006 Jasol Asia Pacific was launched with two branches in Thailand and China successfully opened to realise new opportunities in the growing Asian economy.
